Communication Major of the Year: Leading, Storytelling, and Amplifying Voices
In 2021, I was one of four nominees for Communication Major of the Year at Atlantic Cape Community College. That year, due to COVID-19, we held the awards ceremony in a new format, streaming it live on YouTube. To introduce myself to the viewers and judges, I created a video essay sharing my story, my heritage, and my future aspirations in film and communication. This virtual format not only allowed me to connect with current peers but also inspired past Communication Major of the Year recipients to reach out. After the show, I had the chance to connect with previous winners, including Ethan Gabreze, with whom I later collaborated on a short film project.
Receiving this award was both an honor and a responsibility that reinforced my commitment to using storytelling to amplify underrepresented voices. I helped the Communication Awards club plan events, spoke to high school students, and built relationships with faculty and staff. It was a milestone in my journey, reminding me of the power of community and mentorship in pursuing one's passions. I became more outgoing which later helped me transfer from community college to a four-year university. Following this recognition, I also returned to host the 16th Communication Awards alongside other notable alumni, celebrating the achievements of new communication students.
